The Active Freeze Dryer (AFD) is a patented technology of Hosokawa Micron B.V. The technology enables the freeze drying of pharmaceutical drug substances via sublimation at low pressures in a jacketed vessel. A screw-arm motion gently agitates the frozen substance continuously while a vacuum pump is used to evacuate air and vapor from the chamber. To aid sublimation, energy is indirectly introduced to the frozen substance via the jacketed wall of the vessel.
This project aims to study the AFD process via small scale experiments using a representative sample material. The focus is to deepen our understanding of pressure and temperature variation during the freeze drying process. Particularly, pressure variation in the dryer will be studied and proposals for process optimisation will be made. To carry out the experiments, a transparent piece with fittings that allows connections for temperature and pressure probes have been designed and fabricated.
For this project, you will have access to Hosokawa Micron’s testing facility and also support from experienced process technologists and engineers.
