The project focuses on comparing the performance of two horizontal continuous paddle mixers – Hosokawa’s Modulomix and another horizontal high shear mixer.
The Modulomix (see Fig. 1) is a continuous modular paddle mixer based on proven Cyclomix batch mixing technology. It has been designed specifically for the pharmaceutical industry and can be used for low, medium or high shear applications. The other mixer is designed to operate as a high shear mixer and operates at higher feed capacities compared to the Modulomix. The overall goal is to quantitatively define the extent to which the performance of the both mixers compare. You will perform tests on the two equipment in our test facility. Characteristics and process variables such as the feed capacity, residence time distribution, mixing quality (RSDs/CoV) and effects of shear for a number of reference test samples (with tracers) will be compared. While performing the test, you will gain exposure to other unit operations (e.g. feeders, batch mixing), sampling, data analysis and experimental documentation, among others.
